It was only a matter of time before the distinctions between Facebook and Myspace became more blurry. In the next logical step last Thursday, Facebook integrated a service for band members/artists to post and sell their own music and music-related items.

The service is entirely free for artists on the new “Facebook Music” application. The new application has designated sections for a music player, photos/videos, discography, band merchandise and an iCast integrated feature that lets bands post updates/notices to their fans’ profile pages.

I gave the Facebook music application a try, yet I was disheartened to find out that you can not post a band’s song to your profile as similar in Myspace. You can only post band names/pictures/links to your profile. I would much rather hear the actual music on a friend’s profile than to see the cliche band picture. However, fans can rate and review songs, which are in turn streamed from Facebook and can be purchased with a click from the iTunes Store.

One of the original premises for the idea behind Myspace was that of band profiles. I personally only keep my Myspace account around for the fact that I can easily find my favorite bands and check out concert dates, photos, new songs, etc. I can only imagine I am not the only Myspace user who does this.  In consequence, I am seriously debating deleted my Myspace profile entirely.

One step closer to total social network domination by Facebook? I believe so.
